Hearing Associates, Inc. was started in 1976 by Dr.
Ken Smith. At the time, Dr. Smith was employed at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he
headed the Academic Training unit of the University Affiliated Facility (an interdisciplinary training unit).
Shortly after opening the first office in Prairie Village, representing the first independent private
practice in the Kansas City area, Jim and Janna Powell joined the group and opened an office in St.
Joseph, Missouri offering both Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology services.
At first, audiologists did not dispense hearing aids or provide rehabilitation, but that changed during the
second year of the business's operation. Our mission then, as now, was to provide cutting edge technology and the best in customer service. |

Two years later, the St. Joseph office was moved to North Kansas City,
expanding our services to a medical group (Drs. Devine and Burroughs), and that commitment remains today.
Other highly trained, university graduates with advanced degrees have been added to the staff to meet the
ever expanding need. Janna Powell, a trained Speech-Language Pathologist now operates as our Operations
Manager, while Jim Powell provides services in Kansas City, Kansas, Atchison and the Georgetown Medical
Building in Shawnee Mission, by appointment. Dr. Smith maintains a free standing practice in the
Georgetown Medical Building and operates an office at the Paola Medical Plaza in
Paola every Monday. |
